AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass field hockey team earned the program's 23rd NCAA Tournament berth with a 2-1 overtime victory vs. Rider at Garber Field on Tuesday afternoon. Trailing 1-0 in the second half, senior forward Nicole Cordero notched the tying goal before freshman midfielder Allie Sabia added the game-winner in overtime of the NCAA Play-In Game.

During extra time, senior midfielder Kim Young dribbled into the circle and fired an attempt at the cage, with the Sidney, N.Y., native's shot bouncing off of the right post. With the ball rolling in front of the goalmouth, Allie Sabia rushed onto the play and tapped it in for the deciding goal. The tally - scored at the 77:14 mark - stands as Sabia's second of the season and first collegiate game-winner.

Cordero evened the score at 1-1 in the 55th minute. Young was crucial in creating the game-tying goal, sending a pass across the circle to Cordero. The Oak Park, Ill., native controlled possession at the right post before slipping a shot behind Rider starting goalkeeper Joelle Prettyman.

Broncs leading scorer Sandra Penas notched the first goal of the contest in the 10th minute unassisted, using a reverse-stick shot from the left-center of the UMass circle to earn the tally.

UMass led in shots, 15-5, including notching all four overtime attempts, while leading in penalty corners, 7-2 and shots on goal, 7-1 as well. Prettyman made five saves for Rider while freshman Sammy Zeiders did not record a stop for the Minutewomen.

The win secured UMass a berth in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, with the Minutewomen learning their opponent for opening round competition at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The NCAA will operate a live stream for the event, with a link for the selection show available through the official NCAA website, NCAA.com.
