Field Hockey Downs URI, 1-0 On Senior Day
Nov. 1, 2003
AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Kristin Hopwood (Lexington, Mass.) scored on a penalty shot with 19:14 remaining in the second half to give the University of Massachusetts field hockey team (4-15 overall, 2-4 Atlantic 10) a 1-0 win over the University of Rhode Island (7-13, 1-5) this afternoon on senior day at Garber Field.
UMass junior goalkeeper Christine Tocco (Reading, Mass.) made three saves en route to her first shutout of the season.
The Minutewomen dominated play throughout the game, but it was Rhode Island who had the first scoring chance. The Rams tallied four penalty corners in the final two minutes of the first half, but were unable to score. Tocco recorded two saves in that stretch.
Three minutes into the second half, junior Adrianne Monaco (Oxford, N.Y.) sent freshman Gina Sanders (Morgan Hill, Calif.) in, but her shot went just wide. The duo each tallied a shot on goal three minutes later, but URI keeper Jennifer Perry held her ground.
With just over 19 minutes remaining in the second half, Hopwood came out of a flurry in front of the Ram goal with a penalty shot, the Minutewomen's first of the season. She beat Perry to the right side and tallied the game-winning goal, her first of the season.
UMass outshot Rhode Island, 20-4 in the game including 16-1 in the second half. Each team had five penalty corners.
Massachusetts concludes the 2003 season with a 4-15 record. They missed the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time in school history.
