Oct. 27, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - One goal each from Hannah Prince, Molly MacDonnell and Izzie Delario secured the University of Massachusetts field hockey program a 3-1 victory over VCU at Garber Field on Sunday afternoon. MacDonnell and Delario added assists to finish the day with three points apiece while Alexa Sikalis recorded her 16th helper of the season during the game.
MacDonnell registered the first goal eight minutes, 11 seconds into the contest. Standing in front of the cage, MacDonnell deflected a pass by Charlotte Verelst into the top of the cage for the Clifton, Va., native's seventh goal of the season.
After the halftime break, the Minutewomen (14-4 overall, 5-0 Atlantic 10) doubled their lead with a successful penalty corner attempt. Delario inserted the play to Sikalis at the top of the circle, with Sikalis tapping a pass to Prince. The Gorham, Maine, native followed with a shot into the right side of the cage to secure the two-goal advantage.
VCU (8-9, 2-3) cut its deficit in half during the 43rd minute when Nicole Breeman deflected a pass from Emilie Soares by UMass goalkeeper Sam Carlino.
However, Delario padded the advantage with a tip shot at the goalmouth during the 64th minute to seal the game. MacDonnell dribbled into the circle and drew the defense away from the front of the cage before sending the play to Delario for the freshman from Rehoboth Beach, Del., to convert.
The Minutewomen led in shots, 15-4 and on-target attempts, 10-1. Penalty corners also favored UMass, 10-2 as the squad evenly split its chances with five in each half. Megan Botteri finished with six stops for VCU while Kacie Yang added one defensive save for the Rams.
The Minutewomen close the regular season with a pair of road contests. UMass heads to Lock Haven for a 3 p.m. game on Friday, Nov. 1, before traveling to Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday, Nov. 3 for a Noon contest.
