UMass Holds On To Beat West Chester
Oct. 20, 2002
Amherst, Mass. - Sophomore Adrianne Monaco (Oxford, N.Y.) scored 38:32 into the game to lift Massachusetts over West Chester, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Richard F. Garber Field. Monaco's goal, her second of the weekend, gave UMass its second win of the weekend, lifting them to 2-1 in the Atlantic 10.
"We got through this game, but it was a dog-fight," UMass head coach Patty Shea said. "This was probably the biggest game of the conference we've had so far, because it was either them going 2-1 or us going 2-1 (in the A-10). It was a huge step forward for where we need to go."
While UMass clinched the victory in the second half, it was West Chester who got on the board first. At 10:09 into the contest Jill Posen scored an unassisted goal for the Golden Rams. UMass answered the West Chester goal just over six minutes later when Patricia Borneo (Arima, Trinidad) scored on an assist from Sarah Bohonowicz (South Deerfield, Mass.) at the 16:38 mark. Keeping the game close, West Chester fought back to regain the lead just minutes after the UMass goal. Stacey Tomes used an assist from Kendra Wood to give the Golden Rams a 2-1 edge 20:38 into the game. But UMass had an answer for the Golden Rams' score, and rallied to tie the game at the half when Ashley Gilbert (Turner, Maine) scored at the 22:39 mark. The game remain tied until Monaco scored what would end up being the game-winning goal just over three minutes into the second half.
The victory gave UMass its second-straight win, improving their conference record to 2-1. Sunday's game closed out the Minutwomen's home season, sending them on the road for their final four games of the regular season.
