No. 19 UMass Field Hockey Bests La Salle, 4-1

PHILADELPHIA - Senior forward Nicole Cordero provided two goals while senior forward Kate Heineman and freshman midfielder Noralie Weusthuis added a tally each as UMass field hockey downed La Salle, 4-1 on Friday afternoon at DeVincent Field. The victory improved the Minutewomen to 9-8 overall and 3-1 in Atlantic 10 games while the Explorers fall to 7-9 and 2-2 in A-10 competition.
Heineman netted her first goal of the season in the 30th minute to push UMass ahead, 1-0. The senior from Ellicott, Md., sent home a loose ball after Weusthuis fired an on-target attempt at La Salle goalkeeper Lisa Shaffer.
Cordero recorded the first of her pair of tallies less than 10 minutes later, with the Oak Park, Ill., native notching the goal following a shot from distance - doubling the UMass lead at 39:16.
The offensive production continued in the second half with Weusthuis adding her third collegiate goal for the 3-0 Minutewomen lead in the 50th minute. After La Salle's Olivia Shoemaker totaled the lone Explorer mark of the afternoon, Cordero found the back of the cage from inside the circle in the 66th minute to conclude scoring.
Shots heavily favored the visiting side as the Minutewomen held the advantage, 21-12 overall while also leading in on-target attempt, 13-9. La Salle secured four penalty corners to three issued for the Minutewomen. Freshman goalkeeper Sam Carlino notched eight saves for the win while Shaffer stopped nine saves for the Explorers.
UMass continues its season at Saint Joseph's (4-12, 1-3) with a Noon contest on Sunday, Oct. 21.
