RICHMOND, Va. - Opening Atlantic 10 Conference play at the University of Richmond, the UMass field hockey team fell in a 1-0 contest at Crenshaw Field on Saturday afternoon. UMass drops to 5-8 overall on the season while No. 22-ranked Richmond improves to 7-4.

The lone goal of the contest was notched in the 67th minute when Richmond's Christina Amorose lifted a shot into the cage after securing a pass from Avery Safford to create the play.

Three separate Minutewomen recorded one on-target each in senior midfielder Kim Young, senior forward Nicole Cordero and junior forward Molly MacDonnell; however, Richmond goalie Anna Zarkoski was in place to stop each attempt.

Shots on the contest favored the home side, 15-9 while Richmond also led in on-target attempts, 9-3. The Spiders earned five penalty corners to UMass' three. Freshman Sam Carlino secured eight saves for the Minutewomen while Zarkoski stopped three UMass shots to earn the shutout for the Spiders.

The Minutewomen close out non-conference play against No. 1 Syracuse (12-0) on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. on Garber Field.
