Oct. 2, 2013
DEDHAM, Mass. - The No. 13 nationally ranked University of Massachusetts field hockey program secured a 2-0 shutout at Northeastern's Dedham Field on Wednesday evening. Seniors Molly MacDonnell and Alexa Sikalis recorded one goal a piece to create the difference in the contest.
"I am happy with how we bounced back today after two tough losses," UMass head coach Carla Tagliente said. "Northeastern is a strong team. They may not have the results but they came out and played hard. Our performance in the second half was outstanding and it is always great to get two goals from the field."
After a scoreless first half, MacDonnell notched her third goal of the season to put the Minutewomen in front, 1-0. The Clifton, Va., native sent a strike into the right side of the cage by Northeastern goalkeeper Becky Garner to net the eventual game-winning goal 36 minutes, two seconds into the contest.
Sikalis doubled the UMass lead at the 48:48 mark of play with the senior's first goal of the campaign. To create the scoring opportunity, Sikalis dribbled into the circle from the right side and used a reverse-stick shot to reach 30 career points with the Minutewomen.
UMass (8-4 overall) led Northeastern (3-7) in shots, 11-7 and on-target attempts, 5-3. The Minutewomen also earned a 7-5 advantage in penalty corner opportunities. Garner finished with three saves to match UMass goalkeeper Sam Carlino's total on the day.
The Minutewomen return to action with their final non-conference game of the season as the squad travels to Boston University (6-3) on Sunday, Oct. 6, for a 3 p.m. contest against the Terriers.
