AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's field hockey team trailed UConn 1-0 after five minutes of play on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field, an early deficit that proved too much for the Minutewomen to overcome. UMass lost to the Huskies 5-0, falling to 0-9 on the season.

"We have to do the simple things better," UMass Head Coach Patty Shea said. "There's certain things we have to do during the games, so it's just a matter of getting those things done."

After taking the early lead on junior Mary Jo Malone's unassisted goal in the first five minutes of play the Huskies continued to build on their lead. Malone scored her second goal of the game at the 10:10 mark off of an assist from forward Lauren Henderson, and forward Kelly Cochrane added one more goal before the half at the 24:49 mark. The Huskies came out quick in the second half when freshman Becky Helwig tallied a goal just two minutes into the period. Henderson scored the Huskies' final goal at 42:31, giving UConn the 5-0 victory.

Junior Ashley Egland (Ilion, N.Y.) tallied seven assists in the goal for UMass and UConn goalkeeper, Maureen Butler, recorded two saves for the Huskies.

The Minutewomen face Syracuse at Richard F. Garber Field on Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m.
