Sept. 13, 2013
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The No. 7 nationally ranked University of Massachusetts field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season at No. 6 Syracuse, 2-1 on Friday afternoon. Molly MacDonnell tallied the lone Minutewomen goal while Lindsay Bowman added an assist at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
The Orange (5-0 overall) recorded a goal three minutes, 20 seconds into the contest to go ahead, 1-0. Lauren Brooks earned the mark from the left-center of the circle with a low shot into the right side.
UMass (5-1) responded with a goal of its own 4:56 later when MacDonnell registered her second tally in as many games. Near the goalmouth, Bowman sent a bouncing pass toward the left post, with MacDonnell knocking the ball down and into the back of the cage to even the score at 1-1.
Syracuse added its second goal of the day during the final half. Leonie Geyer placed a penalty corner shot into the left corner following a stop by Jordan Page and an insert by Emma Russell.
During the remainder of play, the strongest equalizing chances for the Minutewomen came on a pair of penalty corner attempts in the 59th and 65th minutes. Brooke Sabia fired an on-target shot during the first, while her second drive six minutes later skipped wide to the left by inches.
Syracuse led in shots, 7-4 while penalty corners were tied, 2-2. UMass sophomore goalkeeper Sam Carlino finished with one save in the cage.
The Minutewomen pick back up on Saturday, Sept. 14, with a 2:30 p.m. game against Ohio State (2-2) in the squad's final contest at the Syracuse Invitational.
