Sept. 6, 2003
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman Marije Tigchelaar (The Hague, Netherlands) had a goal and an assist as the University of Massachusetts field hockey team downed St. Louis University, 3-1, this afternoon at the University of Louisville. The win gets the Minutewomen back to the .500 mark on the season at 2-2, while SLU falls to 0-4.
Massachusetts jumped out to an early 1-0 when Tigchelaar received a pass from senior Kristin Hopwood (Lexington, Mass.) and found the back of the net just 6:10 into the game. For Tigchelaar, it was her first career points.
After St. Louis' Carin Boone tied the game at one just over 10 minutes into the second half, the Minutewomen responded with two goals in a five-minute stretch to secure the victory. Sophomore Patricia Borneo (Arima, Trinidad & Tobago) scored the game-winner at the 51:37 mark off an assist by Tigchelaar. Just over five minutes later, junior Caitlin Beresin (Acton, Mass.) gave Massachusetts some insurance when she scored her first goal of the season. Sophomore Jaime Bawden (Penticton, British Columbia) was credited with an assist on the play.
In the cage, junior Christine Tocco (Reading, Mass.) made five saves in the win. On the other side, Julie Moeckel stopped two shots. Massachusetts out-shot the Billikens, 8-7, and held the edge in penalty corners, 10-9.
Massachusetts will return to action tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. game against the University of Louisville.
