Aug. 24, 2012
DURHAM, N.H. - Junior Hannah Prince's overtime goal lifted the UMass field hockey team to a 2-1 season-opening win over #18 New Hampshire on Friday afternoon. The Minutewomen (1-0) had the bulk of the opportunities in the contest, out-shooting the Wildcats (0-1) by a 14-6 margin.
At the 12:59 mark in the opening half, UMass took a 1-0 lead after capitalizing on a penalty corner opportunity. A flick shot by senior Kim Young beat UNH goalkeeper Carlie Tarbell, with freshman Allie Sabia and senior Kate Heineman picking up assists.
However, the Wildcats managed to level the score at 1-1 before the halftime break. Hanna Richard put home a centering pass from Meg Flatley on the right wing in the 29th minute.
Despite seven penalty corners by the Minutewomen in the second half, who finished with 10 to New Hampshire's five on the afternoon, the score remained level at the conclusion of regulation.
Then in the 75th minute, Prince's shot from the left wing gave UMass the victory.
Tarbell totaled four saves for the Wildcats, while the Minutewomen's defense limited UNH to just one shot on target in the contest.
UMass will be back in action tomorrow afternoon in Durham, N.H., facing #15 Ohio State at 2 p.m.
