May 1, 2002
AMHERST, Mass. - Junior softball pitcher Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and women's crew were honored as WHMP/UMass co-Athletes of the Week this afternoon for their performance in last week's competition.
Holtz went 3-0 last week including two shutouts as Massachusetts clinched the Atlantic 10 regular season title and extended its win streak to 28 games. She was also named Atlantic 10 co-Pitcher of the Week. This is her second WHMP/UMass Athlete of the week honor and third A-10 nod.
In the 3-0 victory over UConn Holtz threw a one-hitter with no walks and six strikeouts as she took a perfect game into the final inning. In the Dayton series, Holtz was stellar going 2-0. In game three of the series, she went 10 innings, struck out 12 and allowed just two earned runs. For the week, she allowed 11 hits over 24 innings, while fanning 26 for a 0.58 ERA. Holtz also went 4-for-11 from the plate (.364) with a double and three RBIs. She has thrown 11 shutouts this season and boasts a 0.96 ERA, good for 35th in the nation. The UMass pitching staff as a whole ranks seventh in the nation with a team ERA of 0.97, and Massachusetts is No. 26 in the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 poll.
The UMass women's crew shared this week's WHMP honor with Holtz. The Minutewomen captured their seventh straight Verizon Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing title last Saturday on the Cooper River in Collingswood, N.J. Coach Jim Dietz' team won 5-of-8 races, posting 44 total points.
Massachusetts' five wins are the most by an Atlantic 10 team since the Minutewomen posted six wins in 1999. UMass boats that took gold include the Quad, the Novice 4, Varsity 8, second Varsity 8, and Novice 8-A.
In addition to winning the Atlantic 10 title, the Varsity 8 boat of coxswain Megan Mastropolo (Old Tappan, N.J.), Lea Jakobsen (Copenhagen, Denmark), Sarah Pollmann (Hamm, Germany), Katia Prokopenko (Pskov, Russia), Colleen Banfield (Billerica, Mass.), Hayley McGrath (Florence, Mass.), Anna Talucci (West Chester, Pa.), Erin Cooke (Sinking Spring, Pa.) and Lauren Cromwell (Missoula, Mont.) won their event in a season-best time of 6:48.66 and earned ECAC Crew of the Week honors.
