Kim Benton Named A-10 Rookie Of The Week

AMHERST, Mass. -- Freshman point guard Kim Benton (Springfield, Pa.) of the women's basketball team has been named the Atlantic 10 co-Rookie of the Week the league office announced Monday afternoon. Benton, who averaged 14.5 ppg in a 1-1 week for the Minutewomen, shares the honor with Xavier's Amber Harris. This is the first award of Benton's career.
Benton averaged 14.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 assists per game as UMass went 1-1 last week and set the school record for wins (nine) before Jan. 1. She shot 42 percent (8-19) from the field and 47 percent (8-17) from three-point range. Benton began the week by tying a career-high with 15 points in UMass' 83-80 win over Eastern Michigan Dec. 13. Benton was 4-for-5 from three-point range and also swiped a career-high four steals.
She then added 14 points in UMass' heartbreaking 63-62 loss vs. Delaware Dec. 17. Despite going 0-5 from three-point range in the first half, Benton nailed four trifectas in the second half as UMass overcame a 10-point deficit and nearly pulled off the upset win. One of Benton's three balls gave the Minutewomen a brief lead in the game's final seconds.
For the season, Benton is now fourth on the team averaging 7.8 ppg. UMass (9-3) is off for the next two weeks as it enjoys a break for final exams and the holidays. The Minutewomen return to the hardwood for a New Year's Eve matinee at Boston College. Tip-time is 1:00 PM.
