AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's basketball team began its 2012-13 preseason practice regiment recently as the Minutewomen prepare for the challenging schedule that awaits them during the upcoming season. Head coach Sharon Dawley begins her third year at the helm of the program while the squad looks to improve upon key offensive and defensive characteristics to earn success throughout the coming campaign.

"What we have focused on in week one looks very good," Dawley said. "Starting the second week we are venturing into the motion system. I like where we are at, I think the energy is really strong, the veterans are showing a lot of leadership and the freshmen are showing a lot of talent and enthusiasm. Preseason is a process, but it is coming together nicely."

Among the nine returning players, the squad is looking to improve upon the 2011-12 campaign in terms of overall team success while simultaneously completing individual goals for the upcoming season.

"Each day we are just looking to get better, building upon what we put in the day before," sophomore guard Emily Mital said. "We are not looking to take a step back, we are just looking to step forward working together."

Joining the nine returnees are six first-year players, including five true-freshmen and one redshirt-freshman transfer. The newest Minutewomen will add talent and depth to the squad, especially at the guard position.

"With the addition of the freshman class and how hard the upperclassmen have been pushing us and pushing themselves, we come out here every day to practice and just work really hard," freshman guard Jasmine Harris said. "As freshman we are just trying to pick up on things to make this team better and the upperclassmen are there to help us and are making sure that we are going to have a really good season this year."
