UMass' Danella Selected As A-10 Women's Basketball Rookie Of The Week
March 2, 2009
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass freshman forward Kristina Danella was recognized by the Atlantic 10 as the conference's Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week, it was announced on Monday. It marks the fourth time this season Danella has collected the award, matching former Minutewoman Octavia Thomas' total from 1992-93, the most weekly honors for a first-year player in program history.
Danella averaged 19.0 points per-game, 5.0 rebounds per-game and 2.5 steals per-game in a 1-1 week for UMass. She began with 13 points, aided by 3-for-6 shooting from three-point range, in a 77-63 setback at Saint Joseph's last Wednesday and matched a career best with three steals.
Then on Sunday in the Minutewomen's 82-66 triumph over La Salle, Danella led the squad in scoring and rebounding as she tied her career high with 25 points, shooting 7-for-10 overall and 6-for-8 from beyond the arc. The freshman completed her second career double-double with 10 boards, while also nabbing two steals.
After draining six treys against the Explorers, Danella is currently second in the UMass record book with 56 three-pointers made and needs just two more to equal Katie Nelson's single season record of 58.
Danella finished the regular season averaging 9.4 points per-game, 13.3 per-game in conference play, and leads the Atlantic 10 with a .421 three-point field goal percentage (56-133).
The Minutewomen will travel to Charlotte, N.C., this Friday, where the squad will open play in the Atlantic 10 tournament against the No. 6 seed, Duquesne, at 8 p.m. in Halton Arena.
