Women's Basketball Drops Exhibition, 73-58

AMHERST, Mass. - Junior Brooke Campbell (Baltimore, Md.) scored a game-high 16 points, but the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team fell to Team Concept, 73-58, in an exhibition game tonight at the Mullins Center. Campbell led a trio of Minutewoman double-figure scorers in the team's first time out this season.
In addition to her 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and 4-for-5 at the free throw line, Campbell also added three rebounds, an assist and a steal. Senior Glamora Maeweather (Country Club Hills, Ill.) added 11 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, a steal and a blocked shot, while freshman Joyce Massey (Detroit, Mich.) chipped in 11 points, three rebounds and a steal. Freshman Tamara Tatham (Brampton, Ontario) had eight points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field. Senior Cleo Foster (Toronto, Ontario) dished out five assists and also added four steals, while junior Monique Govan (Chicago, Ill.) had six rebounds and four assists.
The Minutewomen shot .577 (15-26) in the first half and led 35-33 at the break, but Team Concept went 17-for-32 (.531) in the second half to earn the win. They outscored the Minutewomen, 19-3 over a 9:24 span of the second half. Massachusetts committed 23 turnovers in the game and shot .333 (8-24) in the second half. The Minutewomen were 8-for-12 (.667) from the free throw line.
Massachusetts will open the 2003-04 season on Friday, Nov. 21, with a 7:30 p.m. game at Sacred Heart. Its home-opener will be on Sunday, Nov. 23 against Holy Cross. Tip-off at the Mullins Center is slated for 4:00 p.m.
