Women's Basketball Falls To Xavier, 69-46, In A-10 Quarterfinal

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Tara Boothe had 22 points and 10 rebounds as Xavier (20-8) defeated Massachusetts (14-15), 69-46, Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at the Smith Center on the campus of George Washington University. Sophomore Tamara Tatham (Brampton, Ontario) led UMass with 14 points.
UMass trailed by three points, 24-21, at the 5:11 mark of the first half, but Xavier closed out the half on a 13-2 run to take a 37-23 at halftime.
Xavier remained on fire in the second half. Boothe hit a three-pointer to start the half and UMass was down 17 points. The Minutewomen cut it to 14 on a pair of free throws by senior Brooke Campbell (Baltimore, Md.), but then Xavier went on a 9-2 run to take its largest lead of the game at 23 points, 52-29. A three-pointer by redshirt junior Katie Nelson (Ellicott City, Md.) cut the Minutewomen's deficit to 20, but Xavier reeled off the next four points to take a 56-32 lead. Nelson hit another three-pointer, but the Minutewomen could not get a run going.
UMass shot just 38 percent for the game, while Xavier connected at a 39 percent clip. The Musketeers made eight three-pointers while the Minutewomen had just two. Xavier also out-rebounded UMass 43-31.
Boothe was 9-for-13 from the field for her 22 points. Tatham was 6-for-10 for the Minutewomen and their only double-figure scorer. Campbell ended up with eight points, seven rebounds and four assists.
The Minutewomen conclude the 2004-05 season with a 14-15 record. That is eight more wins than a year ago. Xavier will move on to play 16th-ranked Temple in the A-10 semifinals tomorrow at 2:00 PM.
