Women's Basketball Defeats St. Bonaventure, 60-46

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts defeated St. Bonaventure, 60-46, this afternoon in women's basketball action at the William D. Mullins Center. The Minutewomen improve to 7-16 on the season and 5-7 in the Atlantic 10, while the Bonnies fall to 12-11 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
St. Bonaventure jumped out to an early 8-2 lead, shooting 4-for-4 from the field in the first five minutes. The Minutewomen battled back to tie the game, 11-11, at the 10:06 mark on a pair of free throws from junior Nekole Smith (Ann Arbor, Mich.). Senior Caroline Nehls (Randolph, N.J.) gave the Minutewomen their first lead of the game at 9:17 and sparked an 11-0 run, to put UMass up 17-11. The Minutewomen entered the halftime break with a 25-21 lead.
Junior Jennifer Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all scorers at the half with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The double-double marked her 15th of the season. Emma Haywood had nine points in the first half on 3-for-3 shooting from the field.
Stefanie Collins nailed two consecutive three-pointers at the the 16:09 mark of the second half to bring St. Bonaventure within one, 32-31, but it was as close as they would get. The Minutewomen extended the lead to as many as 16 points on a 14-0 run with under five minutes remaining in the game.
Butler led all scorers with 16 points and 18 rebounds. Smith finished with 13 points for the Minutewomen, while junior Ebony Pegues (Columbus, Ohio) chipped in eight points. Collins led the Bonnies in scoring with 14 points, while Courtney Mattingly grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
UMass shot 19-for-50 from the field and 22-for-40 from the free throw line. The Bonnies shot 18-for-51 from the floor and 4-for-11 from three-point range. The Minutewomen outrebounded St. Bonaventure 43-31 and committed a season-low 12 turnovers.
The Minutewomen return to action on Friday, Feb. 15, 2002 when they travel to Philadelphia take on Temple University at the Liacouras Center. The game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
