AMHERST, Mass. - Xavier University defeated the University of Massachusetts, 68-55, this afternoon in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action at the William D. Mullins Center.

The Minutewomen snapped a 9-2 Xavier run with a jumper by junior Caroline Nehls (Randolph, N.J.) at 14:39 in the first half. Freshman Katie Nelson (Ellicot City, Md.) hit a three-pointer at the 14:08 mark to bring UMass within two points of Xavier, 9-7, but it was as close as the Minutewomen would get as Xavier nailed three consecutive three-pointers to go up, 18-9, at 11:22.

Amy Waugh shot 4-for-6 from three-point range to lead all scorers with 15 points in the first stanza. The Musketeers shot 5-for-11 from three-point range and 43 percent from the field to lead, 31-21, at the break. Junior Nekole Smith (Ann Arbor, Mich.) had six points for the Minutewomen, while Nelson chipped in five.

Xavier opened the second half with a 20-9 run to extend its lead to 51-30 with 12:30 remaining. The Minutewomen then went on an 8-0 run capped off by an Ebony Pegues (Columiba, Ohio) jumper in the lane to cut the Musketeers lead to 51-38 with 9:22 remaining. Waugh ended the Minutewoman run with a three-pointer at the 8:11 mark.

The Minutewomen cut the Xavier lead to 10 with 2:22 remaining on a put-back by Jennifer Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.), but could not get any closer as the Musketeers sealed the victory. Pegues led the Minutewomen with 13 points, while Nelson finished with 12. Butler finished with seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Waugh led all scorers with 32 points on 6-for-9 from three-point range, and Aida Sarajlija chipped in with 12 and Shavon Bell had 10 points for the Musketeers. The victory improves Xavier to 8-14 overall and 3-7 in the Atlantic 10, while the loss drops Massachusetts to 6-15 overall and 4-6 in the A-10.



The Minutewomen return to action on Thursday, Feb. 7, when they travel to Fordham University to take on the Rams. The game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
