Women's Basketball Downs Rhode Island 58-49

KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team posted a 58-49 victory over Rhode Island in an Atlantic 10 contest at Keaney Gym on Monday evening. Rhode Island has a three-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
Junior Jennifer Butler tallied a double-double for UMass, scoring a game-high 17 points while pulling down 12 rebounds. Sophomore Shayla Johnson scored a team-high 10 points for Rhode Island while senior Yatar Kuyateh had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds in the setback for the Rams. URI shot just 22.8% from the field while Massachusetts shot 62.9% in the victory.
Massachusetts jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before Rhode Island used a 12-2 run, capped by a pair of free-throws from Johnson, to take a 12-6 lead with 13:16 left in the first half. The Minutewomen responded, however, as they used a 12-0 run over the next four minutes, including five points from Butler, to take an 18-12 lead at the 9:52 mark. Rhode Island cut the Minutewomen's lead to 22-21 with 3:40 left in the half after a jumper from junior Hilary Goodrich. That would be as close as the Rams would get, however, as Massachusetts took a 31-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
UMass opened the second half on a 9-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, a 40-26 advantage with 13:26 left in the contest. The Rams trimmed away Massachusetts' lead, climbing to win five after a pair of free-throws from Kuyateh at the 6:16 mark made the score 48-43. UMass used a 6-0 run over the next three minutes and led by 11 (54-43) with 3:03 left and cruised to the 58-49 victory.
Freshman Katie Nelson scored 15 points and added three assists and two steaks for Massachusetts while junior Nekole Smith tallied 12 points and seven boards. For Rhode Island, sophomore Denise King notched nine points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals while senior Vedrana Bajagic added five points, six rebounds and two blocks in the setback for the Rams.
With the loss, Rhode Island falls to 9-7, 3-3 in the Atlantic 10 while Massachusetts improves to 4-13, 2-4 in the conference. The Rams will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 24th when they host St. Joseph?s in an A-10 contest in Keaney Gym at 7:00 p.m.
