The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team (9-6, 2-2 A-10) overcame a 14-point first half to defeat Saint Joseph's (3-13, 1-3), 42-33, this afternoon before 2,500 fans at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. The Minutewomen used an 20-2 run over 5:52 of the second half to take control of the game. Sophomore Tamara Tatham (Brampton, Onatrio) led UMass with 10 points.

The 33 points allowed by UMass marked the fewest that it has allowed since defeating Hartford, 65-33, on Nov. 25, 1997.

UMass trailed by seven points, 25-18, with 12:11 left in regulation when it began the run. A three-point play by Tatham at 9:38 gave the Minutewomen their first lead of the game. The run was capped by a three-point play from senior Monique Govan (Chicago, Ill.) at 5:29. Freshman Kate Mills (Elkton, Md.) also helped key the run with a three-point play. The Minutewomen shot 73 percent from the free throw line down the stretch and held on for the conference win.

It was a sluggish first half for both teams as the Hawks led by three points, 17-14, at halftime. It marked the lowest point output for the Minutewomen in any half this season. UMass had a stretch mid-way through the half where it scored just three points in 10:46. The Minutewomen also had two different scoring droughts of more than four minutes in the frame as they shot just 21 percent from the field and committed nine turnovers. Two late baskets by Mills kept UMass in the game. Saint Joseph's did not record a field goal for the final 12:50 of the half, but UMass was unable to take advantage.

Tatham was the only Minutewoman to register double-figures. UMass out-rebounded the Hawks, 43-39, and had nine steals. Mills led the way with seven boards while senior Brooke Campbell (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed six. UMass shot 29 percent from the field while the Hawks shot 22 percent.

The Minutewomen open up a three-game homestand by hosting Fordham on Sunday at the Mullins Center. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 PM. For tickets, please call the UMass Athletic Ticket Office at 1-866-UMASS-TIX.
