Women's Basketball Opens Up A-10 Play With A 59-43 Loss At Temple

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Freshman Kate Mills (Elkton, Md.) scored a career-high 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, but Massachusetts (7-5, 0-1 A-10) fell to Temple (9-3, 1-0), 59-43, Tuesday night at the Liacouras Center in Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball action. The Minutewomen shot just 37 percent from the field and committed 24 turnovers leading to 25 Temple points. 17 of those UMass turnovers came in the first half.
Temple broke the game wide open mid-way through the first half by going on a 26-10 run which span 9:01. The Owls led 39-21 at halftime. Temple then scored the first four points of the second half to take a 43-21 lead with 18:09 left. UMass then went on a 9-2 run over the next 1:18 to cut the deficit to 15. Redshirt junior Patrycja Gulak (Olsztyn, Poland) began the run with a lay-up. A minute later, redshirt junior Katie Nelson (Ellicott City, Md.) hit a three-pointer to make it a 45-30 game.
UMass was unable to get any closer however and the Owls hung on for the win. UMass went 6:06 of the second half without scoring and 8:30 without a field goal.
The Minutewomen shot 37 percent (18-49) from the field, while Temple was 49 percent (21-43). The Owls shot 58 percent (7-12) from three-point range, while UMass was just 2-for-9 (22 percent). UMass out-rebounded the Owls, 31-26, but committed 24 turnovers. That led to 25 Temple points.
Mills also had four rebounds and three steals to go along with her career-high 14 points. Nelson also added 10 points and five assists. UMass had 13 steals on the night.
Kamesha Hairston, Cynthia Jordan and Jennifer Owens each had 12 points to lead Temple. Candice Dupree also added 10 points and seven boards.
UMass senior Brooke Campbell (Baltimore, Md.) pulled down a team-high seven boards. Five of those came on the offensive glass.
