Former Vermont standout to serve as Director of Basketball Operations
Former University of Vermont standout May Kotsopoulos joins the University of Massachusetts women's basketball staff as the Director of Basketball Operation for the 2012-13 season. Kotsopoulos, a star with the Catamounts under current UMass head coach Sharon Dawley, will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day functionality of the program.
"We are thrilled that May has joined our UMass Women's Basketball Family," Dawley said. "She was a tremendous student-athlete and leader at UVM for four years. May will bring a winning attitude to the program and serve as an exemplary role model."
Kotsopoulos played for Vermont from 2006-10 and assisted Dawley in bringing the program to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. An all-around player, Kotsopoulos averaged 13.7 points over a 129-game career with 124 appearances in the starting lineup. For her efforts on the court, Kotsopoulos was lauded by numerous organizations, including being named the America East Defensive Player of the Year in following the 2007-08 season and taking home three All-America East Team and four America East All-Defensive team awards.
Paralleling her success on the court in the classroom, Kotsopoulos was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in the 2009-10 season, secured a pair of ESPN The Magainze Academic All-District 1 laurels and was recognized three times as an America East Conference Scholar Athlete.
After completing her stellar collegiate career, Kotsopoulos was signed by the WNBA's Connecticut Sun in 2010 before playing professionally in Greece for two years. While overseas, Kotsopoulos was recognized on the Eurobasket.com All-Greek Team on two occasions while earning the organization's Greek League Newcomer of the Year in 2011. Kotsopoulos' success at the professional level earned the 5-foot-10 guard a spot on the Greek National Team in 2012.
While in Ontario between seasons in Greece, Kotsopoulos stayed connected to the game and used her skills to assist the KW Lightning Basketball Organization as a volunteer. Kotsopoulos graduated from the University of Vermont in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
