The UMass Minutemen concluded the cross country season Saturday, taking 13th place overall at the 100th annual ECAC Championships in Van Cortlandt Park. Donning the maroon and white one last time, senior Nils Fischer (Stow, Mass.) finished first for the Minutemen, 14th overall, with a time of 25:42. As this was his last season of eligibility, Fischer will not compete during the indoor or outdoor seasons. (more)
The UMass men's cross country team ranked seventh, while the women's team took 22nd at the NCAA Regional Qualifier in Bronx, N.Y. this Saturday. Senior leader Nils Fischer (Stow, Mass.) led the way for the Minutemen, finishing 29th overall, while redshirt sophomore Shiyi Zan took 18th overall for the women. Both the men and women continued to improve on their finish from last year, with the Minutemen jumping four places, while the Minutewomen leaped six. (more)
Redshirt sophomore Shiyi Zan (Ottawa, Ontario) has been named the Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year in women's cross country in voting conducted among the league's sports information directors. Also earning Academic All-Conference honors for the Minutemen was sophomore Kevin Johnson (Ludlow, Mass.).
The UMass men's and women's cross country teams head to Van Cortlandt Park this Saturday in Bronx, N.Y. for the NCAA Regional Qualifier hosted by Columbia University. The Minutemen, coming off their second-ever Atlantic 10 Championship title, look to improve this year's finish in the 10K, as they placed 11th at the Qualifier last season. UMass remains at number seven in the USTFCCCA polls for the Northeast region. The Minutewomen, finishing seventh two weeks ago at the Atlantic 10 Championship, hope to boost the 28th place finish from last season.
The UMass men's cross country team was led by junior Jonathan Pierce to finish first at the Atlantic 10 Championships this Saturday in Charlotte, N.C. The Minutemen's top five runners all placed all placed in the top 25 to give UMass a one point edge over Duquesne. Pierce finished the course in 24:22.8 to rank first overall for the Minutemen. This is the first time all season Pierce has led the pack for the squad.
