Nov. 15, 2007
Amherst, Mass. - The men's and women's cross country teams will head to New York on Saturday to compete in their last race of the 2007 season. Fordham University will host the ECAC women's championship as well as the IC4A men's championship races at local Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Both teams are coming off strong performances towards the end of their seasons and a solid showing at the NCAA Regional Qualifier last weekend.
The women's team will be competing in the ECAC Championship race and will be led for the last time by senior leader Christina Derosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) DeRosa won both her races before the Qualifier and earned another individual honor this past week when she was name Atlantic 10 Women's Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Year.
Redshirt-freshman Shiyi Zan (Ottawa, Ontario) will set the pace for the Minutewomen behind DeRosa one final time. Zan has been the consistent number two runner for UMass this season and was also named to the Academic All-Conference team with her senior counterpart this past week. Junior Beth Harlow (Melrose, Mass.) and freshmen Kristin Darling (Miller Place, N.Y.), Erin Megan (Shirley, Mass.), and Elisabeth Fisk (Seekonk, Mass.) were all top-five finishers in the NCAA Qualifier last weekend and have been consistent top finishers for the Minutewomen all season.
The men's team is bringing a very successful season to a close this weekend at the five mile IC4A Championship race. The Minutemen have remained in the top 12 of the Regional Coaches Poll for the second half of their season. The team has been led by freshman Jeff Hill's (Blackstone, Mass.) consistent top team finishes all season. The Minutemen were also led by the freshman at last weekend's Qualifier where he placed 36th overall as the team's first finisher. Junior Jess Regnier (Hampden, Mass.) has been the veteran leader for UMass this season and was the team's top finisher in this event last season. Regnier, along with DeRosa was named the Atlantic 10 Men's Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Year this week as he has been a frequent top-five finisher this season and for his All-Conference performance in the A-10 Championships.
Sophomores Andrew McCann (Fayettville, N.Y.), and Jonathan Pierce (Hanover, Mass.) along with freshman Kris Carle (Jackson, N.J.) were all top-five finishers at the Qualifier and the Minutemen will look to these three runners to round things out at the Championships.
The event will take place at New York's Van Cortlandt Park where the men's race will begin at 10:30 a.m., while the women's race will start at 11:00 a.m.
