Men's XC and T&F Introduces Freshmen For The 2012-13 Season
Head Coach Ken O'Brien, Assistant Coaches David Jackson and Darcy Wilson had perhaps the busiest summer of all and have brought in 26 freshman this season between both track and field and cross country.
Coach Jackson has helped recruit and coach some of UMass' best athletes in recent years.

The men's cross country and track and field teams are led by Coach O'Brien and this offseason has been a busy one for the experienced coach. He will be bringing in 13 freshman recruits to this year's cross country team. Last year's freshmen, Peter Farlow and Gregory Copeland had solid seasons for the Minutemen and will be asked to mentor the newcomers.
Benjamin Thomas (Manlius, N.Y.) was a key performer coming in 14th place for the Fayetteville -Manlius High School cross country team that won the New York Sate Championship during his senior year. He will bring championship meet experience that he gained as a member of one of New York's most successful programs not only at the state championship level, but also while competing at the Nike Team Cross Country Nationals during his final two seasons in High School. His training, as well as consistent performances over events ranging from 800-3200 meters should lead to success in the longer events as a collegiate athlete.
Quentin Stipp (Arlington, Mass.) was 15th in the Massachusetts All-State Cross Country Championships. During the indoor season he placed sixth at the All-State Championships in the mile run and grabbed 10th at the New Balance National Indoor Championships. Stipp finished his senior indoor season with a personal best of 4:18.4. in the mile. He capped off his outdoor season by finishing fifth in the mile at the All-State Championships while improving his time to 4:15.95.
Daniel Sheldon was one of West Windsor Plainsboro South High School's leading performers on their cross country team. The team finished fourth in the New Jersey State Championships. Dan also concluded a senior indoor season with a third place finish in sectionals and 11th place for the 3200 meter run in the New Jersey State Championships.
Jarret Ross (Townsend, Mass.) was one of the states most improved runners from his junior to senior year and placed sixth in the 2012 Massachusetts All-State Championships for the two mile run and is bound to be one of Coach O'Brien's most competitive runners.
Nicholas Patterson (Rockaway, N.J) placed second in the 3200 meter run at the Morris County Indoor Meet, seventh in the New Jersey Group Two Meet and first in the New Jersey Indoor Sectional Championships in his senior season at Morris Hills High School.
Mitch Negus was top performer with Mansfield High School cross country team where he brought home a league and state championship. Negus was 12th in the Division-II Cross Country Championships and captured the runner up spot in the Hockomock League two mile run. He also placed ninth in the 2012 Division-II Outdoor two mile run.
Jake LeBlanc was recruited out of Western Massachusetts and was one of the top three runners for the Ludlow High School's cross country team that was ranked seventh in the nation.
Miles Hodge (Stow, Mass.) was a Fred Warren District E Champion in the two mile and placed second in the mile at the Massachusetts Central Division Outdoor Championships. Hodge also placed fourth in the two mile at the Massachusetts Central Division Championships and placed fifth in the 2011 Catholic Memorial Cross Country Meet in 16:28, and fourth in the Division-I Massachusetts District Cross Country Meet.
Benjamin Groleau (Framingham, Mass.) placed third in the mile at the Massachusetts All-State Outdoor Championship with a time of 4:14.53 and also placed 1st in the 1000 meter run at the at Massachusetts Eastern Division-I Indoor Championships in 2:30.10. Groleau placed ninth in the All-State Cross Country Championships as a senior at Framingham High School.
Sam Burke will also be running for Coach O'Brien this fall and is another freshman out of Western Massachusetts. Burke was a star runner in cross country and hockey player for Cathedral High School in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Eric Albino was recruited out of State Hill, New York for the Minutemen and was a New York State Section 9 State Qualifier Champion in the 1600m and placed second in the 3200 meter run. Albino was also a top five finisher in the three mile at the New York State Section 9 Championships.
Mike McNaughton (Haverhill, Mass.) placed second in the 800 meter run at the Merrimack Valley Conference Championships and was a top five finisher in the 800 meter run at the Massachusetts Eastern Division 1 Outdoor Championships. McNaughton was also a top seven finisher in the 800 meter run at the Massachusetts All-State Outdoor Championship and was third place in the Massachusetts Division-I State Championship in the 1000 meter run.
Khampasong Haleudeth (Mansfield, Mass.) was a key member of his high school cross country team and the 4x800 meter relay and distance medley relay squads.
Hayden Frechette-McCall (Holden, Mass.) placed second in the 400 meter run at the Massachusetts Central Division Outdoor Championships and was a top nine finisher in the 400 meter run at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. Frechette-McCall was a member of the fifth place 4x800 relay at the New Balance Outdoor National Meet in 2011 that established a Massachusetts state high school record. He was also a member of the fourth place distance medley relay at the 2012 New Balance Outdoor National Championships.
Jose LaSalle was recruited by Coach O'Brien out of Marshfield, Massachusetts. LaSalle placed fourth in the 400 meter hurdles at the Massachusetts Eastern Division-II Outdoor Championships and was a member of the National High School Championship Team (Marshfield High School) in the Distance Medley Relay at the 2012 New Balance Outdoor National Meet.
Nichols Ingham, out of Peabody, Massachusetts a solid competitor in a multitude of events for Peabody High School. Ingham placed second in the high jump and third in the 400 meter run at the Northeast Conference Championships. Ingham was also finished in the top 10 in the 400 meter run at the Massachusetts Eastern Division 1 Outdoor Championships.
Jason Hiou (Peabody, Mass.) placed first in the 800 meter run at the Northeast Conference Championships and was a top eight finisher in the 800 meter run at the Massachusetts Eastern Division-1 Outdoor Championships.
Zachary Grube (Peabody, Mass.) was a Massachusetts Eastern Division-I Outdoor Champion in the 100 meter hurdles and was also a high jump and 100 meter hurdles champion at the Northeast Conference Championships.
Stephen Farlow (Needham, Mass.) placed third in the shot put at the Massachusetts Eastern Division-II Outdoor Championships and was a top five finisher in the shot put and discus at the Bay State League Meet.
Isaiah Fariel (Hanover, N.H.) was a New Hampshire All-State and Division-II long jump champion at Hanover High School.
Youssef Elkorchi (Newton, Mass.) Placed second in the 200 meter dash at the Massachusetts Eastern Division-I Outdoor Championships.
Michael Cyphers (Grantham, N.H.) was a New Balance National Emerging Elite pole vault champion and was second in the New Hampshire Meet of Champions in the 200 meter dash. Cyphers was also a New Hampshire Division-II pole vault champion.
Jair Cruikshank (Bolton, Mass.) placed third in the 400 meter hurdles at the at Massachusetts All-State Outdoor Championship in 2012 and won the 2011 Massachusetts State Coaches Association Meet in the 600 meter run in 1:22.06.
Mathias Burner (Setauket, N.Y.) was a top nine finisher in the discus at the New York State Championships and placed second in the discus at the New York State Section 11 State Qualifier and Section 11 Division Championships.
John Tyler Brooks was a New Mexico 3A-5A 400 meter Champion and a 100 meter dash third place finisher.
Thomas Adams (East Lyme, Conn.) placed first at the Ista Championships in the pole vault and placed second at the Nepsta Division-II Championships in the pole vault.
Be sure to follow the Minutemen in their 2012-13 campaign in cross country and track and field. This week on September 15 the men's cross country squad will host Amherst College, Keene State, UConn and Stonehill College. The Minuteman Invite start time is set for 11:30 AM.
