The Atlantic 10 Releases Preseason Fall Sport Coaches Polls

AMHERST, Mass. - The Atlantic 10 Conference released its 2007 Fall Sports Coaches Polls on Tuesday with UMass having strong showings: Field Hockey was picked to finish third, men's cross country picked to finish fourth, women's soccer picked to finish fifth, women's cross country picked to finish seventh, and men's soccer picked to finish 10th.
The field hockey team finished 2006 with a 6-14 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the Atlantic 10. The Minutewomen enter the 2007 season under the direction of new head coach Justine Sowry and will begin the regular season on Aug. 26 at Syracuse.
The men's cross country team placed third at the A-10 Championship Meet last fall which was the team's best showing since 2001. The Minutemen will begin the 2007 season at the Dartmouth Invitational on Sept. 8, before hosting its only home meet of the season on Sept. 15.
The women's soccer team finished 2006 with an 11-6-0 overall record and a 5-4-0 record in the A-10. The Minutewomen will begin the season on Aug. 31 against Maine. The game will be part of the URI Tournament in Kingston, R.I., with the Minutewomen facing Providence two days later.
As with the men, the women's cross country team is coming off a strong 2006 season where the Minutewomen placed sixth at the A-10 Championship Meet improving three spots from the previous year. Senior Christina Derosa has been UMass' top runner in every meet of her career and leads the team into action on Sept. 8 at Dartmouth before returning home the following weekend.
Rounding out the fall sports represented in the poll is the men's soccer team who are predicted to move up two spots from last season's finish. The Minutemen finished the year at 8-8-3 overall and 2-6-1 in the A-10. UMass started the 2006 season strong earning a No. 20 national ranking. The Minutemen will begin the season on Aug. 31 at Maine.
