AMHERST, Mass. - Earlier this week the men's cross country team held a vote for who will be the captains for the 2014 cross country season. Decided by the athletes the team selected Patrick McGowan and Benjamin Thomas to lead the way for the Minutemen. Next season McGowan will be a redshirt senior and Thomas will be a junior. This will be Thomas' first season as a captain and McGowan's second campaign leading the Minutemen.

McGowan came into UMass as a highly touted recruit and has not disappointed on the track when healthy. Unable to compete last year due to injury the Mansfield, Mass., native ran for three top two finishes for UMass in 2012. As a freshman he was one of the team's top harriers, recording six top four finishes for UMass with four of them being in the top three.

Thomas began his UMass career making an impact right away in 2012 when he ran for five top seven performances including a third place effort at the IC4A Championship. In his second year as a Minuteman the Manlius, N.Y., native showed significant improvement placing in the top three for UMass in five of the six meets he appeared in with a fourth place finish.

In 2014 the Minutemen will return all of their runners from 2013 except two-time All-Conference harrier, Antony Taylor. The senior class will consist of Michael Giardina, Richard Racz and McGowan. The team will remain young however it will be an experienced one. The roster will consist of 22 sophomores and juniors all together, many of whom contributed in a big way in 2013.
