Cross Country Competes at NCAA Northeast Regional Championship

BOSTON, Mass.- Both University of Massachusetts cross country teams competed in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship held at Franklin Park this weekend. The men's team finished 22nd in the 33-team field while the women placed 24th out of 36 squads.
The men's race was won by Iona College. The top three UMass finishers were sophomore Ryan Corbett (East Longmeadow, Mass.) who placed 87th with a time of 32:33, freshman Michael Dulong (Verona, N.J.) who posted a time of 33:26 for a 128th-place finish, and junior Andrew McCarron (Lunenberg, Mass.) whose time of 33:32 was good for a 137th-place finish. Also competing for the Minutemen were freshman Aaron Strellner (Highland Park, Ill.) (33:34, 138th-place), senior Rich Harris (East Windsor, N.J.), (33:42, 147th-place), junior Matt Clark (Worcester, Mass.) (33:59, 161st-place), and Josh Williams (Athol, Mass.) (35:30, 198th-place).
The women's race was won by Providence College. The top UMass finisher was senior Kate Markopoulos (Porter Corners, N.Y.) whose time of 23:23 placed her 98th. Rounding out the top three Minutewomen were freshman Cuisle Kierans (Newbury, Mass.) who finished in 127th-place, clocking a time of 23:39 and junior Alexis Anzelone (Westfield, N.J.) whose time of 23:48 was good enough for a 137th-place finish. Also competing for the Minutewomen were senior Tricia Silva (Haverhill, Mass.) (23:53,144th-place), junior Amanda Dahlberg (Gardner, Mass.) (24:39, 184th-place), and junior Loren Donohue (Millbrook, N.Y.) (25:48, 223rd-place).
The 2003 men's and women's cross country season is now complete.
