McGowan's Return Boosts Minutemen In Regional Championships

MADISON, Conn. - Men's cross country ran well as a team on Friday in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships. The Minutemen finished 10th as a team and were led by junior Patrick McGowan. McGowan ran in his first meet since the Dellinger Invitational and finished first for UMass and 51st overall out a total 239 harriers. McGowan's time of 31:34.6 was good enough for his third top two finish of the season for UMass.
Finishing second and third were senior John O'Shea and junior Antony Taylor respectively. O'Shea crossed the finish line at 31:39.8 and 60th overall while Taylor finished at 32:00.5 in 79th place overall. Their performances accounted for O'Shea's fifth finish in the top three this season and Taylor's fourth.
Close behind the top three were Coach O'Brien's freshmen making the trip. Benjamin Groleau finished 84th overall and fourth for UMass, crossing the finish line at 32:06.2. Trailing was fellow freshman Daniel Sheldon. Sheldon finished fifth for UMass and 109th overall with a time of 32:36.6.
The Minutemen will compete in the IC4A Championships next Saturday for their final meet of the season in Bronx, N.Y. the start time is set for 10:00 a.m.
