Men's XC Captures Third At A-10 Championships

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The UMass men's cross country team combined for a solid performance at the 2010 A-10 Cross Country Championships at Duquesne on Saturday morning in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Minutemen placed an impressive third amongst 14 conference squads, with 144 competitors in the field. UMass tallied 112 points, only to be outdone by Duquesne in second and the Richmond in first.
In their final A-10 Cross Country Championship as Minutemen, brothers Kevin and David led the squad in true Johnson fashion. The twins placed first and second on the team, while taking 12th and 13th overall with marks of 24:59 and 25:00. Both were clocked in at a pace of 5:02 per mile, and posted season best individual times. All-Conference honors were also awarded the Ludlow, Mass. natives.
Next up were seniors Andrew Mulvaney and Scott VanderMolen, both of whom have been strong competitors for UMass all season long. Finishing in 20th and 33rd respectively, the two harriers crossed the line at 25:16 and 25:35. Through the A-10 Meet, neither senior has placed outside the team's top five in the four meets competed in for the duo this season.
Rounding out the scorers for the Minutemen was Robert Deegan in 34th place. The Pembroke, Mass. native finished with a time of 25:38, and a pace of 5:09. Also competing for UMass was Sonny Gamble and Andrew Erwin.
The cross country team will hit the course next on November 13 for the NCAA Regional Championships. The meet is being hosted in Madison, Conn. at Hammonasset State Park. The meet is set to kick off at 11:45 am.
