MXC Claims Fifth At A-10 Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - It may not have been the perfect result, but the UMass men's cross country team had a strong showing at the 2011 A-10 Championships on Saturday. The Minutemen placed fifth overall in a field of 14 with 127 points. In Charlotte, N.C. La Salle took home the A-10 Title, while Sean Duncan (Gardner, Mass.) and Patrick McGowan (Mansfield, Mass.) earned All-Conference recognition for UMass.

For a fourth straight meet, Duncan was the top UMass harrier, placing a stellar eighth overall in 24:44.0. Sophomore Patrick McGowan was not far behind the Gardner, Mass. native in 12th with a time of 24:54.3. The two combined registered 20 points for UMass.

Sophomores Antony Taylor (Arlington, Mass.) and Jared Reddy (Methuen, Mass.) ran close together, finishing third and fourth on the team and 27th and 29th overall. The two Minutemen crossed the line at 25:26.3 and 25:28.1 respectively. Both recorded personal season best times on an official 8K course.

Senior Andrew Erwin (Mansfield, Mass.) was the final scorer for the Minutemen by crossing the line at 26:06.4, while taking 56th overall. Erwin's time was also a personal season best. Joining the top five finishers at the A-10 Meet were Paul Merriman, Benjamin Mears, Dan Joyce, Michael Giardina, and Patrick McAllister.

Ken O'Brien's squad returns to action on Nov. 12 for the NCAA Regional Championships.
