Men's Cross Has Encouraging New England Championship Meet

BOSTON, Mass. - UMass placed 28th overall with 767 points in a New England Championship that included 41 teams and 279 runners on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Miles Hodge led the way in Boston and was one-of-four harriers to improve their time from two weeks ago in Franklin Park.
Hodge placed 85th overall and improved his time at Franklin Park by 18-seconds by crossing the finish line at the 25-minute, 52-second mark. He was followed by the freshmen John Burns and Morgan Marlow. Burns was another one of Coach O'Brien's harriers to improve his time, completing the race 22-seconds faster this time around finishing in 26-minutes, 29-seconds and placing 140th overall. Marlow, high school teammate of Blake Croteau, was immediately behind Burns in 141st place at 26-minutes, 31-seconds.
Michael Giardina placed fourth for UMass with a time of 27-minutes, 1-second for a 194th place finish overall. Sam Burke made the largest improvement on the day, running the course in 27-minutes, 13-seconds for 207th overall. His time in Saturday's race was 1-minute, 43-seconds better than his previous performance in Boston earlier this season.
Finishing off the top seven for the Minutemen was freshmen Eric Gironda and Jacob Holscher. Gironda placed sixth for UMass and 231st overall, finishing the race in 27-minutes, 29-seconds. Holscher finished just behind Gironda at the 27-minute, 33-second mark for a 234th place finish.
