Fischer, Zan Lead Pack At UMass Cross Country Home Meet

Amherst, Mass. - Senior Nils Fischer (Stow, Mass.) placed first overall, while the Minutemen took four of the top five (and seven of the top ten) spots en route to a first place finish on Saturday in their only home meet of the season. On the women's side, redshirt sophomore Shiyi Zan (Ottawa, Ontario) also finished first as the Minutewomen placed third overall behind Vermont and Maine.
Fischer completed the course in 25:41 for the winning time. Junior Andrew McCann (Fayetteville, N.Y.) placed second with a time of 25:45. Right behind him was senior Jesse Regnier (Hampden, Mass.), with a finishing time of 25:46. Placing fifth with a time of 25:51 was junior Nicolai Naranjo (Essex Fells, N.J.). Another cluster of runners placed eighth, ninth, and tenth to complete the top seven scoring runners for UMass. Fifth on the team and eighth overall, Jonathan Pierce recorded a time of 26:20. Brothers Kevin and David Johnson ran the 8K in 26:26 and 26:31, respectively, to round out the top seven. UMass scored 19 points in the victory, with Maine finishing second, followed by Vermont, Colgate, and UConn.
Zan led the Minutewomen, finishing the course in 18:21 for the best time overall. Second on the team, and ninth overall, freshman Claire Pettit (Warwick, N.Y.) completed the race in 18:57. Placing third for the Minutewomen, 15th overall, sophomore Gina Perno ran the 5K in 19:22. Fourth on the team, 20th overall, freshman Karen Roa finished the course in 19:38. Kristen Darling took 25th overall, with a time of 19:48. Vermont won the event, with 37 points, followed by Maine, Massachusetts, and Colgate.
Both the men and women's team return to action October 3 at Lehigh University for the Paul Short Invitational.
