AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's and women's cross country teams opened their fall seasons Saturday with a second and third place finish, respectively.

Sophomore Ryan Corbett (East Longmeadow, Mass.) won the men's race with a time of 23:02. He took command of the race at the three mile mark and completed the run on top. Corbett bettered the time of last year's race winner by 49 seconds. The top three men's finishers for UMass were first-place Corbett with a time of 23:02, fourth-place finisher junior Rich Harris (East Windsor, N.J.) with a mark of 23:28, and sixth-place finisher freshman Mike Dulong (Verona, N.J.), who posted a time of 23:38. The Minutemen had 5 finishers in the top 10.

The women's race was won by the Catamounts of Vermont. The top UMass finisher was junior Alexis Anzelone (Westfield, N.J.) with a time of 18:22. Rounding out the top three Minutewomen were 10th-place finisher senior Tricia Silva (Amesbury, Mass.) with a time of 18:54, and junior Amanda Dahlberg (Gardner, Mass.) whose time of 19:02 placed her 11th. The Minutewomen had four finishers in the top 15.

"I was temporarily disappointed, but realized we are a young team with only two seniors," said Head Coach Ken O'Brien. "I was pleased with the performance overall."

UMass will be in action next on Saturday Sept. 20, at the Ted Owen Invitational, in New Britain, Conn. The race will begin at 1:00 p.m.
