UMass Cross Country Teams Race in Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts men's and women's cross country teams finished second and third, respectively, in their lone home meet of the season at Totman Field.
The University of Maine won the men's team race with 18 points, as the Black Bears claimed six of the top 10 spots. UMass finished second with 56 points and Vermont was third with 66 points. Maine's Nolan Tobey, a senior from South China, Maine, took first place with a 23:51 clocking.
Leading the way for the Minutemen was junior John Jacobson (Taunton, Mass.), who finished seventh over the 4.5 mile course in 24:44, while sophomore Andy McCarron (Lunenburg, Mass.) was eighth in 24:56. Junior Mike Ahearn (Paxton, Mass.) placed 12th in 25:02, freshman Paul Noone (Worcester, Mass.) 14th in 25:13, sophomore Josh Williams (Athol, Mass.) 16th in 25:18, freshman Jeff Way (Marston Mills, Mass.) was 18th in 25:26 and senior Ted Breen (Stoneham, Mass.) finished 20th in 25:37.
The women's 3.0-mile race, meanwhile, was won by Vermont with 32 points, followed by Maine (37 points) and Massachusetts (51). Vermont's Michele Palmer, a junior from Plymouth, Mass., took first place in 17:39.
The UMass women had three runners place in the top 10, paced by a
seventh-place finish from sophomore Alexis Anzelone (Westfield, N.J.), who
ran a time of 19:13. Senior Julie McGee (Needham, Mass) was eighth in 19:17,
while senior Elizabeth Mitchell (Aspen, Conn.) was ninth in 19:18.
Other top 20 finishes for the Minutewomen were turned in by freshman Emma Horton (Newburyport, Mass.), who was 12th in 19:34; junior Tricia Silva (Amesbury, Mass.) finished 15th in 19:40, sophomore Amanda Dahlberg (Gardner, Mass.) was 19th in 20:20 and junior Kate Markopoulos (Porter Corners, N.Y.) was 20th in 20:24.
The UMass men's and women's teams return to action Sept. 28 at the Meet of Champions in the Bronx, N.Y.
