John Hoogasian joined the UMass coaching staff as an assistant coach for men's and women's track and cross country teams in the fall of 2008. A native of Spencer, Mass., Hoogasian brings over 37 years of coaching experience to the UMass staff.
Coach Hoogasian comes to UMass from Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. For the Crusaders, Hoogasian held the position of assistant coach from 1991 through 2008. At the start of his Holy Cross career, Hoogasian started the U.S.A. Track and Field Pole Vault Development, which he continues to work at as Regional Chairperson.
Prior to his tenure at Holy Cross, he served a number of roles at his alma mater Worcester State College. There, he was the head men's and women's cross country head coach from 1975-1991. For the Lancers from 1983-1990, Hoogasian held the head indoor and outdoor track and field position. Right after receiving his masters, Hoogasian held the assistant indoor track coach position from 1975-1983.
Coach Hoogasian previously worked as Executive Officer in the Soldier Requirements Division of the United States Army Infantry Center in Fort Benning, Ga., and is a veteran of four mobilizations of the Global War on Terror under Operation Enduring Freedom, Noble Eagle, and Iraqi Freedom.
Hoogasian graduated in 1971 from Worcester State College with a B.S. in Social Sciences. He later received his master's in General Education from Worcester State in 1974 before receiving his C.A.G.S. in Educational Administration and Leadership and his PHD in Educational Administration and Leadership from the University of Connecticut.
