Men's Track & Field Competes At IC4A Championship The UMass men's and women's track and field teams competed at the IC4A and ECAC Championships this weekend at Princeton University in N.J. The Minutewomen accumulated five points, while the Minutemen did not score. The top performance of the day, and all five points, came from redshirt senior Kristen Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.), who tied her own school record with a pole vault of 12-07.50, ranking fourth at the meet. With that season-best mark, Bakanowski also qualifies for the NCAA East Regionals, joining teammate Lisa Wilson, which will take place on May 29 in Greensboro, N.C. (more)
Redshirt senior Kristen Bakanowski and sophomore Kevin Johnson, both of the UMass track and field team, earned Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Academic All-Conference honors on Wednesday. Darius Law and Lamarra Currie of Charlotte were named the Student-Athletes of the Year. (more)
The UMass men's track and field team finished second at the New England Championship over the weekend, edged out by Rhode Island. The men finished with 80 points while the Rams ended day two with 103. The performance of day two came from juniors Sonny Gamble (Marlborough, Mass.) and Sean Duncan (Gardner, Mass.) who finished one, two in the steeplechase with respective times of 9:14.36 and 9:16.22. The win gave UMass a shot at taking over first before Rhode Island pulled away with field events. (more)
The UMass men's track and field team competed Friday at the New England Championship, finishing first with a score of 46. New Hampshire is in second with 29 points. The top story of the day came from junior Andrew McCann (Fayetteville, N.Y.) who ranked first in the 10,000 meter with a time of 31:22.60 to garner 10 points for the Minutemen. In the 5,000 meter run, Jonathan Pierce (Hanover, Mass.) finished second after leading most of the way, crossing the finish line in 14:40.33. Also, a new UMass Facility record was set in the 100 meter dash. Steve Headley of Springfield College finished in 10.54 to break Jeff Smith's (Boston College) previous record of 10.56 set last year.
New England Championship Information
The UMass men's and women's track and field teams return home to Amherst, Mass. this Friday and Saturday for the New England Championship. Friday will start with the decathlon at 10:00 a.m. on the track with the 100 meter. Saturday at 10:00 a.m., the heptathlong kicks off the day with the long jump, while the decathlon 110 meter hurdles will be on the track. Last year, both the men's and women's team ranked seventh overall. Rhode Island won on the men's side, while Boston College took the gold for the women.
The UMass men's track and field team competed at the Atlantic 10 Championship for a tenth place finish of 11 teams with a total of 29.50 points. Charlotte won on the men's side with 217.50 points.
