Former UMass Runner Erwin Earns National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass men's track and field alum Andrew Erwin '12 has received a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, it was announced recently. The program awards fellowships to individuals based on their demonstrated potential for significant achievements in science and engineering.
While pursuing his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at UMass, Erwin's research included advancements in the treatment of individuals with chronic kidney disease while he also developed a haptic device for upper limb amputees. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with Commonwealth College Honors with Greatest Distinction and received the Big Y Scholarship, Senior Leader Award, Kenneth O'Brien Honors Athletic Scholarship, and 21st Century Leaders Award.
In the summer of 2012, Erwin began pursuing a PhD at Rice in Mechanical Engineering in the Mechatronics and Robotics Research Laboratory. At Rice, he has spent time working towards developing robots for rehabilitation of spinal cord and stroke injury patients. During the fall, he developed a grip force sensor for measurement of grip forces during therapy on a rehabilitation robot and his work will be presented at the fall 2013 American Society of Mechanical Engineers Dynamic Systems and Controls Conference. This past spring, Erwin was named a NASA/Texas Space Grant Consortia Fellow.
Erwin ran cross country for the Minutemen and competed in the 1500m and 10k for the UMass track & field squad. During his athletic career he was both a member of the Athletic 4.0 Club and the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
