June 2, 2011
AMHERST, Mass. - Four members of the UMass men's track and field program have garnered Academic All-District honors, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday. Seniors Sean Busch, David Johnson, Kevin Johnson and junior Daniel Wu held four of the 11 spots on the Capital One Academic All-District 1 Men's Track & Field/Cross Country First Team and are now eligible for Academic All-America status.
This marks the second career Academic All-District nods for both Busch and Kevin Johnson as both were recognized with the award as juniors in 2010. Johnson went on to become the 42nd student-athlete in UMass history to earn Academic All-America honors, the fifth award by a member of the men's track and field/cross country programs.
Busch finished his career with the Minutemen by sweeping the Atlantic 10 indoor and outdoor pole vault titles in his final two seasons at UMass. During his time in Amherst, Busch set the school's indoor pole vault record (16-00.75) and posted the second-highest outdoor vault in program history (15-9). He was named the 2010-11 UMass Senior Male Athlete of the Year across all sports.
In addition to his two academic all-district accolades, Busch was tabbed the 2011 A-10 Indoor Student-Athlete of the Year and was named the UMass Male Winter Scholar-Athlete in both 2009-10 and 2010-11, while being selected the UMass Male Spring Scholar-Athlete in 2010-11, as well. Majoring in Electrical Engineering, Busch posted a 3.72 cumulative grade point average and was a three-time Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference honoree.
David Johnson helped lead the UMass cross country team to a third-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships last fall after finishing second on the squad and 13th overall. He was the Minutemen's top competitor on the 10,000 meter run during the outdoor season with a time of 30:17.07 and finished seventh at the A-10 meet in the 5K (14:52.92), qualifying for the IC4A Championships in both events. As a Food Science major, Johnson recorded a 3.95 GPA.
David's twin brother, Kevin, took fifth in the 5K at the A-10 Championships with a time of 14:45.15 and posted the team's second-fastest time in the 10K this spring (30:17.84), qualifying for the IC4As in both. Johnson earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors in cross country both in 2009 and 2010, finishing 12th at the A-10 meet last fall. Boasting a perfect 4.0 grade-point average as a Food Science major, Johnson collected four Academic All-Conference accolades in his time at UMass and was tabbed the UMass Male Fall Scholar-Athlete in 2009.
Wu scored in three events at the Atlantic 10 Championships this outdoor season, taking 6th in long jump (22-7), 6th in high jump (6-2.25) and 8th in triple jump (44-10.75). His season-best mark in the outdoor long jump, 23-5.50, tied four fourth all-time in the program's record book. During the indoor season, Wu placed third in the long jump at the A-10 meet, reaching a distance of 23-0.75, while qualifying for the IC4A Championships. The Finance major holds a 3.83 grade point average and was named Academic All-Conference for indoor track & field.
