NEWPORT NEWS, V.A. - On Thursday afternoon three UMass track and field competitors were named to the Academic All-Conference team for the women and men respectively. Highlighting the field for the Minutewomen was Shiyi Zan, while Sean Busch and Daniel Wu took home the honor for the men. Ashley Cattran from Dayton and Darius Law from Charlotte were named Student-Athletes of the Year for the women and men respectively.

Zan was outstanding both in and out of the classroom this outdoor season for the Minutewomen. Holding a near perfect 3.942 GPA as a Kinesiology major, Zan climbed her way into the UMass track and field record book as well. At the A-10 Championships (5/2), the redshirt junior distance runner placed eighth in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 37:20.21, good enough to qualify for the ECAC Championships. The mark was also the fourth best in school history. Zan was also named the 2009 Fall UMass Female Scholar-Athlete.

For Busch, this is the second Academic All-Conference team he has been named to during his junior campaign, following the indoor track and field season. The junior pole vaulter reached a height of 15-3 at the conference meet and was crowned an A-10 Champion on May 1. Busch also set the second best mark in school history at the UNH Pre-Conference Meet (4/24), reaching a height of 15-9. An electrical engineering major, Busch currently holds an impressive 3.74 GPA. Not failing to impress, Busch was also named the 2009-2010 UMass Male Winter Scholar-Athlete as well.

Currently a finance and operations management major, with a 3.96 GPA, Wu's conference recognition comes after a solid outdoor season in both the triple and long jumps for the Minutemen. The sophomore set the fourth best mark in school history in the long jump, while qualifying for the IC4A Championships, at the A-10 Championships (5/1), reaching a distance of 23-05.50. The sophomore's best season mark in the triple jump came at the UConn Invitational (4/3), where he jumped a distance of 42-11.00, capturing fifth place overall. Wu was also recently named to the A-10 Commisioner's Honor Roll.

The track and field season will head towards conclusion at the NCAA Regional Championships, set to take place on May 28 and 29.
