Men's Track & Field's Otis Honored As 21st Century Leader
May 9, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - Graduating senior Nick Otis of the men's track and field program was among 10 students of the University of Massachusetts honored as 21st Century Leaders during the 2014 Undergraduate Commencement on Friday evening at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
A nutrition and kinesiology major and member of the Commonwealth Honors College from Goshen, Otis already has made strides in improving the health and well being of disadvantaged populations. He learned Swahili in preparation for both work with street children and research in Tanzania. In Africa, Otis showed a keen ability for relating to children and others through sport and cultural exchange projects.
He is a compassionate neighbor, organizing his peers during a final-exam week to help draft a business plan for a small business destroyed by fire. He plans to work internationally on health issues.
Last fall, Otis was awarded the Salute to Service and Community Research Award in response to all of his work in public service and social justice. He has been involved in education nonprofits like the Steppingstone Foundation, nutrition work at The Food Bank of Western Mass and community research in Lowell.
