Nick Ingham Named UMass Athlete Of The Week
April 23, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass freshman Nick Ingham has been named this week's UMass Athlete of the Week by the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee for his performance last week in he Holy Cross Decathlon. This is the Peabody, Mass. native's first time winning the award and it was his first time competing in the decathlon.
Multi athletes do not get to compete in the pentathlon, heptathlon or the decathlon very often in the regular season due to the amount of time it takes to compete in one of the events. Once a year the track teams travel to Worcester, Mass. for the Holy Cross Heptathlon and Decathlon in order to compete in the event before they attempt the two-day grind at the conference championship.
Nick Ingham led after day one of competition and realized he had a shot at winning the event. He would then finish the competition first in a field of 21 athletes, reaching his goal of hitting the 6,000 point mark with a total of 6,186 points. Out of the ten events Ingham came to UMass only knowing two of them and has worked on learning the other eight with Coach Jackson all year long. The score puts Ingham third in UMass program history for the event.
Coach Jackson has mentored Ingham in his freshman season and had this to say about his success to this point.
"Nick is a bright young man who will be a shining star for the men's track program and the university. His intensity and ability to compete with every fiber of himself is the primary reason for his success. He will be the school record holder by the time he leaves UMass."
Ingham will compete this weekend in a variety of events at the UMass Pre-Conference Meet in preparation for the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship in Charlotte Mass. on May 3 and 4. This weekend's meet is set to start at 11:30 A.M. and is senior day for UMass.
