UMass Track & Field To Participate In Run For Boston
April 17, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - Sunday at 10:00 A.M. the UMass track and field programs will participate in the Run For Boston honoring victims and the fearless first responders that risked their lives to help those affected by the Boston Marathon bombing this past Monday afternoon. The event will be a fun-run style gathering that invites all citizens of the surrounding community to Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass. where there will be food, music and opportunities to donate to those affected by the recent tragedy.
Driven by the urge to bring the Western Mass. community together to show support for the cause, UMass track and field alumnus Jason Ayr took the initiative to make the Run For Boston a reality. Ayr runs for the Western Mass Distance Project, a competitive team consisting of many UMass alums that competes in various marathons and events around the country. The class of 2010 graduate welcomes everyone to come together, run, walk, hang out, donate and have fun on Sunday morning.
"The main goal of the event is to bring the running community as well as the UMass community together and share this experience with everyone who wants to help and support those affected." Ayr said. "The running community is a very close, tight knit group."
So far the Western Mass. running community has responded to the event in strong numbers. UMass and surrounding college and high school programs have expressed interest and plan on attending Sunday's benefit.
UMass track and field senior, Michelle Jenssen responded to the UMass cross country and track and field programs taking part in the Run For Boston earlier today.
"A lot of UMass track and field alumni are a part of the Western Mass Distance Project. It's great to see everyone in the UMass community come together to help out the victims, raise money and show support." Jenssen said. "It makes me proud to be part of the UMass Track & Field Program and this university."
