Cotto And Aguguo Named UMass Athletes Of The Week
March 1, 2010
AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Tyler Cotto (Holliston, Mass.) and junior Stephanie Aguguo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) were named co-UMass Athletes of the Week on Monday. Both competitors captured first place in their respective events this past weekend at the New England Championships. Cotto improved upon his second best school time in the 55 meter hurdles on both Friday and Saturday. Aguguo meanwhile moved to second all-time in UMass history in the triple jump while qualifying for the ECAC Championships.
Cotto began the weekend on Friday by improving upon his previous second best school time in the 55 meter hurdles. He placed second in the preliminaries with a time of 7.54 on day one to better his mark of 7.55, set at the BU Quad Meet (1/14).
The senior hurdler did not stop, as on Saturday he not only was crowned a New England Champion in the event, but also improved upon his time once again by crossing the line at 7.47. He missed qualifying for the NCAA meet by a mere 0.24. Cotto also helped his team to a solid sixth place finish out of 33 teams, and will compete at next weekend's IC4A Championships.
Aguguo was titled a New England Champion in the triple jump with a distance of 39-08.75 on Saturday. Aiding her team to a sixth place finish out of 33 teams, the junior jumper qualified for the ECAC Championships to be run on Mar. 6 and Mar. 7. The mark now places Aguguo second all-time in Massachusetts history in the triple jump, and was a personal best.
Cotto and Aguguo will be honored this Wednesday, Mar. 3 in Room 1009 of the Campus Center at 12:15 pm. Guest speakers at the luncheon will include men's hockey head coach, Don "Toot" Cahoon and men's baseball head coach, Mike Stone.
