Korhonen Named UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week
Feb. 14, 2006
AMHERST, Mass. - Fifth-year senior Jon Korhonen (Gardner, Mass.) has been named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week after breaking the UMass school record in the indoor mile on Saturday at the Boston University Valentine Invitational.
On Monday he was named the Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week for his efforts. Korhonen also qualified for the IC4A Championships and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships. His time of 4:04.26 was the fastest in the Atlantic 10 this season.
Korhonen's performance broke the 25-year standing record that was held by Paul Beaulieu who previous set the record in 1981. Korhonen also lept past UMass Hall of Famer, All-American and current Boston College track coach Randy Thomas who was previously second all-time.
At the Valentine Invitational, Korhonen finished second overall among 117 competitors in the event clocking a career-best performance. He is the first UMass track athlete to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships since Kwesi Frimpong-Boatang.
Considered as one of the marquee events in track and field competitions, his time on Saturday is not only the fastest indoor time on record at UMass, but the fastest mile time ever in school history for both the indoor and outdoor mile.
UMass will next compete at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday, Feb. 18 in Kingston, R.I.
Korhonen will be honored this Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the UMass Sports Luncheon which will be held in the Cape Cod Room of the Student Union starting at Noon. Guest speakers include hockey coach Don "Toot" Cahoon and women's basketball coach Marnie Dacko. The Sports Luncheon runs from Noon to 1:00 p.m. with a salad-to-dessert buffet for just $7.00.
