Northeastern Marks Next Test For Men's Track
Jan. 24, 2014
ROXBURY, Mass. -
Northeastern Invitational On Deck
The Minutemen will compete in their third meet of the season at the Northeastern Indoor Games on Friday, January 24 at the Reggie Lewis Center. So far this season UMass has shown off its depth turning in consistent productivity on the track and have already left a mark on the record book after last week's competition.
A Record Broken, Multis Shine In Rhode Island
The Minutemen continued their success from the season opener at the Sorlien Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Kingston, R.I. but it was what happened on Friday that highlighted the men's performance in their second week of competition.
Nick Ingham battled to score a program record 4,731 points over the course of two days in the URI heptathlon prior to Saturday's meet. The sophomore finished fourth overall in the contest and was followed by freshman multi Adam Bonifilio in eighth place. Bonifilio's score of 4,379 points places him fourth all-time in the event at UMass.
Ingham was then honored later in the week by the University of Massachusetts, Atlantic 10 Conference and the Eastern College Athletic Conference as performer of the week.
A Successful Season Opener
Despite just a week of practice prior to their first meet, many of Coach O'Brien's Minutemen appear to be ready for the grind to come. Out of the nine top eight performances UMass turned in, seven included freshmen.
In the field it was a pair of first year Minutemen who grabbed eighth or better in their respective events. Springfield, Mass. native Lamont Gooden had the best finish of the day with a leap of 46-feet in the triple jump landing him second in the meet. Coach Jackson's newest multi Adam Bonifilio tied for eighth in the high jump with a height of 6-feet, 0.5-inches
Cross Country standout Ben Thomas would then go on to take a fourth place finish in the 3,000 meter run. Completing the race in just 8-minutes, 38.61-seconds. Another Minuteman to find success individually on the track was Stephen Bigelow. The senior hurdler finished fourth in the 60 meter hurdle finals with a time of 8.30-seconds.
