Cotto And Hobbs Tabbed Co-UMass Athletes Of The Week
Jan. 18, 2011
AMHERST, Mass. - On a snowy Tuesday morning senior Tyler Cotto and junior Danny Hobbs were tabbed the co-UMass Athletes of the Week in Amherst. Cotto helped lead the men's track and field team to a second place finish in the team's opening meet of the indoor season this past Saturday, while Hobbs helped lead the Mass Attack to two victories over the Lowell Riverhakws.
Cotto has been nothing short of superb during his time at UMass, and the outstanding performances continued in the first track meet of 2011. The Holliston, Mass. native, who already holds the second best school time in the indoor 55 meter hurdles, was crowned first place in the same event at the Sparks Sorlein Invitational with a time of 7.53. Cotto helped lead the Minutemen to a solid second place finish with 117.50 points.
Hobbs continued his scoring touch for the hockey team this weekend, tallying one goal and three assists over the weekend. On Friday, he scored the game-winning goal with 11.6 seconds left at UMass Lowell while adding one assist. On Saturday, he posted two assists for his fifth multi-point game of the year. The Quebec native has posted five goals and seven assists in the last nine games.
The two UMass standouts will be recognized for their performances at this Wednesday's Weekly Sports Luncheon at the special time (just this week) of 10:45 am in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center. Softball head coach Elaine Sortino will be the featured speaker this week.
