KINGSTON, R.I. -
A Look At The Sorlien Invitational
On Saturday, January 18 at 11:00 a.m. the Minutemen will compete at Mackal Fieldhouse in Kingston, R.I. for the annual Sorlien Invitational hosted by URI. The Minutemen will look to continue their success from a week ago where it was a balanced combination of eager underclassmen and experienced seasoned veterans that came together to produce a solid amount of team and individual success in the unscored meet.
The Minutemen have also sent Adam Bonifilio and Nick Ingham to URI early for the URI Heptathlon. The two have been battling over the past two days with results to come in tomorrow's complete recap of the URI Heptathlon and the Sorlien Invitational.
A Successful Season Opener
Despite just a week of practice prior to their first meet, many of Coach O'Brien's Minutemen appear to be ready for the grind to come. Out of the nine top eight performances UMass turned in, seven included freshmen.
In the field it was a pair of first year Minutemen who grabbed eighth or better in their respective events. Springfield, Mass. native Lamont Gooden had the best finish of the day with a leap of 46-feet in the triple jump landing him second in the meet. Coach Jackson's newest multi Adam Bonifilio tied for eighth in the high jump with a height of 6-feet, 0.5-inches
Cross Country standout Ben Thomas would then go on to take a fourth place finish in the 3,000 meter run. Completing the race in just 8-minutes, 38.61-seconds. Another Minuteman to find success individually on the track was Stephen Bigelow. The senior hurdler finished fourth in the 60 meter hurdle finals with a time of 8.30-seconds.
