Mike Carr Closes Out Stellar Career With 11th-Place Javelin Finish At NCAA East Regional
May 30, 2005
NEW YORK - Senior Mike Carr (Rehoboth, Mass.) took 11th-place in the javelin throw at the NCAA East Regional on Friday afternoon to close out a stellar career as a member of the University of Massachusetts men's track and field team. He fell just two spots shy of advancing to the NCAA Championships. He was the only member of either the men's or women's team to compete in the regional meet and was one of 25 throwers from the East Regional to qualify for the javelin. The top-9 competitors advance to the NCAA Championships led by Sean Furey of Dartmouth who uncorked a throw of 241-feet, nine inches - just under nine feet short of the East Region record. Carr's best throw of the day was his second mark in the three round event as he recorded a toss of 198 feet, 10-inches. In round one he threw a 189-foot toss, while in the third round he recorded a 198-foot, 3.25 inch mark. His 198-foot, 10-inch mark was the third best of the season for Carr who qualified for the NCAA East Regional with throws of 209-feet even at the Brown Invitational (4/16) and of 204-feet, nine-inches at the Atlantic 10 Championships (5/7). The A-10 Champion this year in the javelin Carr was one of the top point-scorers for the Minutemen as he captured five victories on the season. Along with his A-10 title, Carr took third at the New England Championships this spring - the highest mark of his career at that meet. At the 2003 A-10 Outdoor Championships, Carr was a Second-Team All-Atlantic 10 performer taking second in the javelin with a throw of 192-feet, nine-inches. An all-state and All-New England performer in the high jump and javelin while at Dighton-Rehoboth High School, Carr's primary focus in his final season was in the javelin as he did not compete during the indoor season in the high jump. The results paid off as he bested his previous top career mark by nearly 17 feet. His 209-foot effort at the Brown Invitational stands now as the fourth-best mark in the modern era of the event at UMass.
Carr was the first Minuteman to qualify for the NCAA East Regional since 2003 when standout sprinter Kwesi Frimpong-Boateng finished seventh in the 100-meter dash.
